The history that changed my life!

My name is Yevhen, I am 30, I was born and grew up in the most beautiful city of Odesa. I want to tell you the story that changed my life. On April 30, 2021 I rode to my work on my motorcycle. This is my permanent transport as I work as a courier. At 15:25 I was driving along the Liustdorfska Doroha when a car turned sharply in my direction and hit me down.

The strike was very strong and I flew for about 8-10 meters. I did not lose consciousness and even wanted to stand up from the asphalt, by I didn’t make it. I was shocked when I saw my left leg, my ankle was torn and the bones were broken, by-passers started to help, trying to stop my strong bleeding.  I took my phone, wrote to my friends who were not far away and in 5 minutes they were already on the spot, and 15 minutes later an ambulance arrived and took me to City Clinical Hospital No. 1. On examining all the injuries, it was decided to do surgery and put togehter the foot, as there was a throbbing and there was a chance to save the leg. I was operated on the same day.

In two days I was already moving toes and could feel my foot tickling, it was a great feeling. I was already dreaming of getting back on my feet and leaving the hospital, but in a few days’ time necrosis and rejection appeared. Thirteen days after the accident it was decided to transfer me to the City Clinical Hospital No. 11, to the Purulent-Surgical Department. On May 12 I was operated on for the second time, on May 19 – for the third time, and unfortunately necrosis just ate up the bones fast.

On May 20 my mother was called by the physicians and told her that it would be better to amputate the leg up to the knee then suffer all life long, limp and not part with my cane. That same day my mom came to the room and didn’t know how to tell me about it, because I thought that my leg would be made back together and I would ride my motorcycle again, live my old life. My mom confessed to me, we cried, then the physicians came in and calmed me down, explaining what amputation is and how to live with it. They gave me contacts of people who also have amputations to come and talk to me.

Naturally, I agreed to amputation and on May 25 I had my left leg amputated. In total, I spent 49 days in hospital. This time changed my life, I made acquaintance with very interesting people having amputations and was clam looking how they lived.

I want to thank all the people who helped me get back on my feet, who were nearby, who were worried about me. One of these people came to my hospital and told me that there was a very cool prosthetic and orthotic center called Tellus. I started reading and watching videos about Tellus and was shocked that our country has such technology for prosthetic limbs. Then I got acquainted with people who had prosthetics in this center and was looking forward to my prosthetic lower leg.

When I came to Tellus for the first time, I immediately felt like at home, the staff of the center is very kind, cheerful and most importantly professionals in their work.

In November I was called and invited to a trial fitting of my prosthesis, I was very excited and I can’t tell you the emotions I felt. I finally walked on two legs! It was trial steps, but every day, I walked more. After a week, I put the crutches behind the closet.

I’d like to note that rehabilitation and restoration I received in the center are of great importance. This helped very much and in two weeks’ time I rode my motorbike again!
