The injury I sustained inspired me to become a doctor
Today, we will tell the story of an amazing person who was inspired to become a doctor by an injury he sustained. Vitalii is 41 years old, born and living in the tourist city of Odesa…
Vitalii shares with us:
«When I was 15 years old, I had an accident and sustained a serious injury. The injury was severe, and it was a miracle that my leg was saved at the time. However, over the years, it remained a major issue, with impaired blood circulation and limited functionality. In the spring of 2017, things got complicated due to osteomyelitis. There was nothing left to save, so my left foot had to be amputated to get me back on my feet.
I spent about six months in the hospital, and as a young man, I was deeply impressed by the work of the medical professionals who saved me. My life’s path was set. I became a doctor, and for almost 20 years now, I have worked as an anesthesiologist in the intensive care unit of the Odesa Regional Clinical Hospital. I am deeply passionate about my profession and love my work».
Tellus:
– Perhaps this is a slightly unusual question, but has life become easier for you after the amputation with a prosthesis? Is life more comfortable now?
Vitalii:
– In my case, yes. Of course, I didn’t anticipate this, and if there had been a way to save the leg, I would have. Now, I think it should have been done earlier. I have many more opportunities now, though naturally, there are some inconveniences too))
Tellus:
– And tell us, how do your patients react when they find out you have a prosthesis? Or do you carefully hide it under your trousers?
Vitalii:
– The prosthesis doesn’t give itself away. My gait is good, I don’t wear shorts at work, and the issue doesn’t come up. My colleagues are understanding. I don’t need external help, nor do I ask for leniency. On the contrary, I do sports and can even outdo some of them)
Tellus:
– What are your plans for the future?
Vitalii:
– My plans are very optimistic. I feel healthy and happy. I will enjoy life, raise my children, love my wife, and live life to the fullest!
I keep my spirits high, lead an active and healthy lifestyle, and engage in sports. I love cycling, learned to ski last winter, and walk a lot. I have a wonderful family — my wife and two sons, aged 14 and 7. There’s no time to get bored. I hope to continue living a full life and being useful to society.
Tellus:
– What would you like to say to those who find themselves in a similar situation and are psychologically struggling after recently undergoing an amputation?
Vitalii:
– Don’t give up! Work on yourself, and before long, everything will be fine!
